Cornmeal Mush with Divine Desserts
Before name brands that put out flavored cornmeal were introduced we just went down to the store and purchased the cornmeal and flavored it ourselves. This cornmeal mush with Divine Desserts brings me back to sitting at the table asking if the water was boiling yet or if I could add my own butter and sugar when I got my bowl. I would let it cool down just a little and then skim the top onto my spoon. Mmmm the buttery goodness! Put some toasted, buttered, bread and cool glass of milk on the side and this breakfast is complete.
Cornmeal Mush with Divine Desserts
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cups cornmeal
- 4 1/2 cups water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 Tablespoon Divine Desserts (season to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar (sweeten to taste)
Directions
- Mix together cornmeal, water, and salt in a medium saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until mixture thickens, about 5 to 7 minutes.
- If using as cereal, spoon mush into bowls and serve with milk, Divine Desserts, and sugar, if desired. The cornmeal is rather bland if you just eat as is. If frying, pour mixture into a loaf pan and chill completely. Remove from pan, cut into slices, and fry in a small amount of oil over medium-high heat until browned on both sides. Serve with sauce of your choice.
